To complete your cancellation, submit your request in Step 5 of your dashboard and upload—or email to [email protected]—a clear photograph of your physically destroyed ETC card (chip irreversibly broken); if you cannot furnish this proof, we will manually deactivate your card and a ¥4,000 fee will apply.

Deactivation Confirmation

  1. Submit your cancellation request in Step 5 of your dashboard.
  2. Physically destroy your ETC card—ensuring the chip is completely broken—and upload a photograph via the dashboard or email it to [email protected].

Once we have verified your proof of destruction:

  • Final Billing Cycle
    We will close your account and issue your final statement on the last day of the month following your cancellation request.
  • Security Deposit Refund
    After all outstanding charges are settled, your security deposit will be refunded during the first week of the month immediately following your final statement.

Lost ETC Card Procedures

Article 7 (Loss & Theft)

  1. Reporting Obligations
    In the event your ETC card is lost or stolen, you must immediately notify Japan ETC Card and the relevant road administrator. Please note that any charges resulting from gross negligence remain your responsibility.
  2. Replacement Procedure
    • To request a replacement, please email [email protected] with your full name, Customer ID #, and a brief description of the incident.
    • A replacement fee of ¥2,000. This provides we have to manually deactivate previous card, and request a new one.
    • Shipping: ¥600 / Pickup At Yokosuka Office: Free
    • Once your request is received, please allow 10–12 business days for processing and delivery.
  3. Insurance Benefit
    • Each cardholder is entitled to one complimentary replacement per calendar year.
    • Coverage takes effect 10 days prior to the date on which Japan ETC Card receives your notification of loss.
    • If notification is provided more than 30 days after the incident, a police report will be required to confirm your eligibility for the complimentary replacement.

De-activation & Reactivation Procedures

Accounts delinquent 7 days after invoice due date; late fees commence on day 8.

If unpaid ≥ ¥5,000 after 7 days, card is deactivated. Once invoice paid, you may request reactivation.

Three-Strike Rule: After three deactivations for non-payment, reactivation is not permitted.

Reactivation requires full settlement plus a ¥2,750 fee. New cards issued within 7–10 business days.


Declined & Late Payment Fees Explained

Manage multiple payment methods and designate a primary card in our billing portal. Failed transactions automatically retry secondary cards.

With Insurance Plan: Decline fees waived; 7-day grace period; ¥1,500 late fee after 14 days.

Without Insurance Plan: ¥600 decline fee on month-end failures; ¥1,500 late fee 7 days past due.


Japan Consumption Tax (10%)

All service fees are subject to 10% consumption tax. Security deposits and actual ETC toll usage fees are tax-exempt.

Yes, you can cancel your ETC card account at any time. If you decide to leave Japan, simply follow these steps:

  1. Log in to your account
  2. Go to "Step 5" on your dashboard
  3. Select "Cancel ETC Service"
  4. Follow the provided directions

Once your final bill has been paid in full, your security deposit will be refunded. We offer several options for you to receive the refund.

Important: When requesting a cancellation of the ETC card, you must either return the card to JapanETCcard or dispose of the card by cutting out the chip part and disabling the card usage, as instructed by JapanETCcard. You will be responsible for submitting images to prove that you have properly disposed of the ETC card.

We currently do not offer any contract plans. Our program is simple and operates on a pay-as-you-go basis. You are free to cancel at any time without any obligations.

Important: Customers must keep their payment methods current and avoid expiration or delinquency on unpaid invoices to prevent late fees from being applied.

Yes, you can request additional ETC cards as needed. However, please note the following requirements:

  • The additional ETC card must be for the same owner or an immediate family member
  • This service is not intended for obtaining ETC cards for friends
  • We will verify the vehicle documents to ensure that the additional vehicles are registered in your name

To get your second ETC card, please follow these steps:

  1. Create another account with a different email address as the username (all other information can be the same as your first account)
  2. Inform us that you have created a second account and would like another ETC card
  3. We will link the two accounts together
  4. Provide the paperwork for your other vehicle (Shaken and ETC Setup document) for your second account, or inform us if you have already submitted documents for your secondary vehicle and would like us to move it to your new account
  5. Once we process the paperwork, we will email you to log in and make the deposit

Since this will be your second ETC card, the deposit will be ¥20,000 instead of ¥40,000.

Note: Each account is responsible for its own payment plan. The linked accounts do not share payment plans. They only tie the deposit requirements together to make it easier for additional ETC cards.

The initial deposit can be split into 2 payments of ¥20,000. If a customer would like multiple cards, each additional card requires an additional ¥20,000 added to the account.

A deposit is required because customers' monthly billing cycles are always two months behind.

Important: The minimum deposit required is ¥40,000. However, it may be necessary to increase the deposit requirement based on ETC usage risk. If you are driving over ¥40,000 a month in ETC usage, we will ask you to place an additional security deposit on file. ETC usage is processed the following month.

Example: If a customer is driving an average of ¥100,000 a month, they technically have an outstanding balance of ¥200,000 at risk at any given month. With only a ¥40,000 deposit on file, it poses a ¥160,000 risk if the customer chooses not to settle their bills.

We have customers driving ¥150,000+ regularly each month, so we have implemented new procedures based on customers' ETC usage history. Your deposit requirements may be increased based on the account history and risk factors associated with your ETC usage.

The deposit on file is fully refundable after the final bill has been settled and paid. Once your final bill has been processed and paid, the security deposit will be refunded. We may also ask for verification that your ETC card was destroyed to ensure no further charges can be placed on the card after you leave. We provide several options for receiving your security deposit back after cancellation.

We understand that military families and foreigners are always on the move, whether due to deployment or visits abroad. In any calendar month, if your card is not used, you will not be charged for that month's service fee.

If after 60 days you find that you are not satisfied with our services, we will refund the deposit, and the initial setup fee and your monthly service fee will be waived.

If you had the ETC unit installed and activated, we would not reimburse the expenses you had to pay at AUTOBACS or YELLOW HAT.

Before we can refund the deposit and initial setup fee, we must wait until the following month from the last time you used the ETC tolls to ensure you do not have an outstanding balance before we return the deposit. The funds will be returned to the credit card on file.

Please note:
  • You will still be responsible for any ETC charges that you incurred while using the card. These charges will not be written off as they were incurred while driving in Japan.
  • You will also be responsible for processing merchant fees and administration fees applied to the account, as these cannot be reversed due to 3rd party charges.

The monthly service fee will be waived, and the deposit/initial setup fee will be returned.

Important: A customer may only receive the 60-day money-back guarantee one time. If a customer attempts to register a second time in the future, they may not be eligible for this refund.
