Understanding ETC Go vs. Standard ETC in Japan

Clarifying the Differences Between ETC-Go and Traditional ETC Systems

Important Notice: JapanETCcard.com Cards Are Not Currently Compatible with ETC Go

As of now, ETC cards issued through JapanETCcard.com do not support the ETC Go system. This limitation is due to infrastructure differences and is not a defect of our service. The ETC Go system is operated independently from Japan's nationwide ETC (Electronic Toll Collection) network managed by NEXCO and related authorities.

ETC Go is a relatively new toll and parking system developed by certain local governments and private road operators. These roads have chosen not to integrate with NEXCO’s ETC network, and therefore require specific card issuers with compatible systems.

Standard ETC gates—often labeled “ETC-Only”—are managed by NEXCO and accept all JapanETCcard.com cards. These cover nearly all major expressways and toll roads in Japan.

The ETC Go system represents a small and localized segment of roads and parking facilities. As adoption grows, compatibility may expand, and we are actively monitoring the rollout to offer future support.

Please continue reading to better understand what ETC Go is, how it differs from ETC-Only lanes, and what card issuers are currently eligible.

What Is ETC Go?

ETC Go is a new toll and parking payment system in Japan that utilizes electronic toll collection but differs from the traditional ETC system in its implementation. It requires vehicles to momentarily stop at equipped gates before payment is processed. ETC Go is currently available only at select non-NEXCO-managed roads and parking facilities, typically operated by local municipalities or private companies that prefer an independent toll system.

How Does ETC Go Work?

  • Step 1: Approach the ETC Go Gate

Upon entering a designated toll road or parking facility, vehicles must come to a full stop at the ETC Go gate.
  • Step 2: Automatic Payment

The onboard ETC device communicates with the ETC Go reader to process payment electronically. No cash or physical interaction is required.
  • Step 3: Confirmation

A signal (often a green light or beep) will notify the driver that payment has been accepted. You may then proceed.

How Does This Differ from Standard ETC?

The traditional ETC system, managed by NEXCO, allows vehicles to pass through toll gates at low speeds without stopping. It uses a consistent nationwide infrastructure and is accepted on most expressways and major toll roads across Japan.

ETC Go, on the other hand, is primarily used by independently operated roads and facilities and requires a brief stop at the toll gate for signal confirmation.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is the main difference between ETC and ETC Go?

Standard ETC allows vehicles to pass through toll booths without stopping, using a nationwide system operated by NEXCO. ETC Go requires vehicles to stop briefly while the onboard device processes payment. It is used in select areas not managed by NEXCO.

Why doesn’t JapanETCcard.com support ETC Go?

JapanETCcard.com provides cards fully compatible with the nationwide ETC system. ETC Go is still in its early stages and only supported by a small number of local operators. Once ETC Go is adopted more broadly, we plan to explore integration.

Is ETC Go being adopted nationwide?

No, ETC Go is currently implemented on a limited number of roads and facilities operated independently from the national highway authority. The majority of Japan’s toll roads continue to use the standard ETC system.

Will more cards become compatible with ETC Go?

Yes. Additional compatibility has already been announced with Mitsubishi UFJ NICOS and Toyota Finance Corporation (effective March 25, 2025). More issuers may join in the future.

Can I still use my JapanETCcard.com card on major expressways?

Absolutely. Your JapanETCcard.com card is fully accepted on all standard ETC-enabled highways and expressways across Japan, including those managed by NEXCO and major regional toll authorities.
